Worldwide Restaurant Recommendations

Indian / Mela Restaurant / 152 Shaftesbury Ave / Tel 020 7836 8635 / May 2009 / In middle of the West End, great food, moderately priced, adequate decor. Would definitely return. Normally not a big samosa fan, but they served 2 of them as an appetizer with a trio of very flavorful sauces. Best I've had.

Italian / Bottega Louie / 700 South Grand Ave / Tel +01 213-802-1470 / September 2009 / In the middle of downtown L.A. in an old bank, this all white marble restaurant/gourmet take out is a fun and happening place.

Jewish / Nate'n Al / 414 North Beverly Dr / Tel +01 310-274-0101 / December 2010 / Right in the middle of Beverly Hills, I sat next to Doris Day in the 60s, and this time next to a couple of stars my nephew knew and to whom I was clueless. Great food. Better star and people watching. Art's Deli in the Valley has better food and you'll probably see a TV star there, too.

American & Steak / Pacific Dining Car / 1310 W. 6th St / Tel +01 213 483-6000 / Downtown but a little on the sidelines, this place has been here for 100 years but it's very cool and trendy and expensive. 24/7. It's a must do. Yes, celebrity sightings likely.

Ice Cream / Humphry Slocombe / in the mission
Ice Cream /
Bi.Rite Creamery / mission dolores
Pizza /
Zachary's/ oakland and berkeley
Italian, very foodie, not traditional, casual / Barbacco / financial district

or going to Sacramento? Try The Firehouse. An 1850s dining experience worthy of the best well to do gold rushers.

Jackson (Jackson Hole), Wyoming /trio, an american bistro / 45 S. Glenwood / Tel 307 734 8038 / July 2012 / It's trendy (located in an old gas station), the food is fantastic, cocktails are original (blood orange margarita) and good enough to be located in San Francico.

Italian / 4 Leoni /  via de'Vellutini, 1r / Tel 055 218562 / February 2007 / On a quiet piazza in Oltrarno. It's very popular and fairly Hollywood, but very nice.

Italian / Four Seasons Hotel "Il Palagio & Atrium Bar" /  November 2011 / You can enjoy truly stellar food from Il Palagio in a more casual environment by dining in the Atrium Bar. Either way, some of the best food I've ever had in Italy and the wine list is excellent.

And outside of town in the Tuscan countryside of Chianti, in the town of Panzano check out this Renaissance man of a butcher.  Antica Macelleria Cecchini.

Italian / Terrazza Danieli / Hotel Danieli / November 2011 / Besides a view of the Lagoon and all of Venice which will take your breath away the food, like the Four Seasons Florence, is absolutely some of the best I've ever had. I had a pasta with anchovy paste which was to die for.

Seafood / Cuatro / 1881 S. Kihei Rd / Tel 808-879-1110 / December 2011 / Low key, high quality, small establish in unspectacular strip mall.  Next door to the very well known sushi (& now seafood) restaurant Sensei tel 808-879-0004

"A fusion of Hawaiian and California Cuisine" / Spago / in the Four Seasons Wailea / Tel 808-879-2999 / December 2011

Quintessential Maui Seafood / Mama's Fishhouse / Just past Paia on the Hana Road. Not far from the airport / Tel 808-579-8488 / December 2011

Jams & mustards / l'Epicerie / ile st-louis / September 2008 / A fabulous little store on the busy main street here. Try the mures sauvage jam (wild blackberry) Can't believe they sell online!

Ultra Chic / Michelin Star / arrop richard camarena
Rustic / Tapas / Casa Montana

Authentic / Top Quality / Interesting / Indoor-Outdoor. I didn't particulary like PV but this place was fabulous. Went there twice in 5 days. / in the central downtown area /  El Arrayan

St. Martin, Grand Case / French / L'escapade / 94 Blvd de Grand-Case / (0059) 0590 87 75 04 / February 2011 / I was shocked at how sophisticated this meal was. Pleasant but certainly not fancy, right on the water, the fish was some of the best I've had anywhere. Like being in France.

Barbados / Local Seafood / Brown Sugar / Aquatic Gap, Bay Street, St. Michael / (246) 426-7684 / February 2011 / Next to the Hilton, again surprisingly excellent local fare in a fairly large environment. But although not small, it worked well and I'd make the trip here even if I weren't staying at the Hilton.

Check out Food and Wine magazine's suggestions.
Chowhound is my favorite message board and has pointed me to great meals from Las Cruces, NM to the Big Island to Cape Town.
Frommer's is great too - it's how I found Mela in London (above) and another great spot in Boston.
